What is ambisonics, and why would a producer care?
Ambisonics is a way of recording a full 360-degree soundfield instead of just "left and right." A proper ambisonics microphone array captures sound arriving from every direction around it at once, encoding height, width and depth into a single set of channels. Unpack that recording later and you can decode it into stereo, into binaural for headphones, into 5.1 or 7.1 surround, or into Dolby Atmos. For house and techno producers building ambient intros, environmental texture layers, or spatial sets for an immersive room, that's the difference between a flat field recording and one that actually breathes around the listener.
The catch has always been the gear. A 1st-order ambisonics microphone (think a Sennheiser Ambeo or a Zoom H3-VR) plus a dedicated recorder has typically run from a few hundred dollars into the low thousands, before you've bought the decoding software to do anything with it.
What does ab Recorder actually do?
Audio Brewers released ab Recorder on the App Store on July 27, 2026, and its pitch is blunt: point a recent iPhone at a scene and it uses the phone's built-in microphone array to capture 1st-order ambisonics, recorded losslessly at up to 32-bit float / 48kHz, according to Synthtopia and Rekkerd. It runs on iPhone 16 Pro, 16 Pro Max and later Pro models, the hardware generation with a microphone array dense enough to resolve directional audio.
The app records video alongside the audio, up to 4K at 60fps, so a field recordist can walk away with a synced immersive audio-and-video clip in one take rather than juggling a separate recorder and camera. The ambisonics file is captured raw; decoding to stereo, binaural, surround or Dolby Atmos, or to a custom speaker layout, happens afterward, so the same recording can serve a stereo edit, a club installation, and an Atmos mix from one session.
Recording once and deciding the output format later is the actual workflow shift, not the ambisonics buzzword.
Why does the €6.99 price matter?
ab Recorder costs €6.99 on the App Store. That's the whole story here: a technique that required specialist hardware and a real budget is now a one-time app purchase running on a phone most producers already carry. It won't replace a dedicated ambisonics rig for a film post house chasing higher-order accuracy: 1st-order ambisonics has real resolution limits compared to 3rd- or 4th-order arrays used in professional post-production. But for a producer sampling atmosphere for a track, capturing a room tone for a spatial DJ set, or building Atmos-ready stems without renting gear, the barrier to entry just collapsed.
