DIY synth builders have spent years treating the original Daisy Seed board as the default brain for custom modules, pedals and desktop instruments. Seed3 is the company betting that bigger, faster and fully open still wins.
What's actually in the box?
Three kits, three formats. The Desktop variant is built for a standalone instrument on your bench, the Eurorack version is sized and powered for a modular case, and the Pedal kit targets stompbox builders who need the chip to survive a pedalboard. All three share the same core: an ARM Cortex-M7 running at 480MHz, pushing 32-bit audio at 192kHz, with 65MB of RAM on board. That memory pool is the detail worth sitting with: it is enough to buffer up to 10 minutes of audio, which opens the door to granular engines, long-form looping and sampling patches that the original Seed simply could not hold in memory.
Why does open hardware matter here?
Electrosmith is shipping the full schematics and KiCad files alongside every kit. That is not a marketing gesture. It means a builder can inspect the exact circuit, swap a component, shrink the board for their own enclosure, or hand the files to a small manufacturer and have boards fabricated independently of Electrosmith ever staying in business. In a Eurorack and DIY-pedal world where plenty of "open source" claims stop at a GitHub repo of firmware while the hardware itself stays proprietary, releasing the actual board files is the part that keeps the platform alive long after any single company's roadmap.
The schematics are the real release here. Firmware you can always rewrite. A locked board, you're stuck with.
When can builders actually get one?
The Desktop and Eurorack kits are available immediately. The Pedal variant is still 3-4 weeks out, per Electrosmith's own community forum, so stompbox builders are the ones waiting. Pricing spans EUR228.16 for the Pedal kit up to EUR400.14 for the Desktop version, with the Eurorack kit landing in between at EUR342.81. None of the three ship with an enclosure: that part, as with most of this ecosystem, is left to the builder.
