Motorized knobs look incredible on a synth demo video and worry a lot of buyers the moment the demo ends. A part that moves is a part that can fail, and producers have long treated motorized controls the way they treat any moving mechanism in expensive gear: useful, flashy, and one bad tour away from a repair bill. Melbourne Instruments just put a number on that anxiety.
The Melbourne, Australia builder has extended a 10-year warranty to the motorized rotary controls across its whole line, NINA, DELIA and ROTO-CONTROL, covering both new buyers and everyone who already owns one.
Why don't these knobs wear out like a normal pot?
A standard potentiometer works by physical contact: a wiper drags across a resistive track, and that friction is exactly what eventually wears it out, the scratchy, crackling fader on an old mixer is that wear surface failing. Melbourne Instruments builds its motorized knobs differently. Torque passes from the motor to the control through a magnetic field instead of a gear train, and the control's position is read optically. Nothing touches. The company puts it plainly: "There is no wear surface anywhere between the motor and the player's fingers."
That design is what let the company run its durability claim past the usual marketing round number. It says the motors have been tested beyond 50 million actuation cycles, which it frames as roughly 500 times what it expects from a conventional potentiometer, and calls 10 years the point "at which Melbourne Instruments stopped counting" rather than where the mechanism actually gives out.
What do you actually have to do to get the full ten years?
The warranty sits alongside the standard product warranty and only activates once you register the unit. If you bought before August 17, 2026, the clock on registration runs to February 17, 2027, register by then and coverage backdates to your original purchase date. Miss it and you're presumably back to whatever shorter standard warranty applied at purchase.
The claims process is split by age of ownership. In the first two years, a warranty claim goes through wherever you bought the instrument, same as today. From year three through year ten, it goes straight to Melbourne Instruments, which says it has service points in Europe, the US and Australia to handle it. The cover excludes the usual outs: misuse, accidental damage, unauthorized modifications, liquid damage, and repairs done outside the approved network.

Why it matters
Motorized controls are the single feature Melbourne Instruments has built its identity on, from NINA's morphing filter knobs to ROTO-CONTROL's role as a motorized MIDI controller for other people's gear. A durability guarantee this long, tied to a specific cycle count rather than vague language, is the company answering the community's biggest reservation about the tech with a number it's willing to stand behind commercially.

A warranty is a bet, and companies don't put a decade behind a part they expect to fail. Putting hard cycle counts and a magnetic, contact-free mechanism front and center, rather than just saying "trust us," is the right way to close the credibility gap that's followed motorized knobs since they showed up in affordable gear. It won't move anyone who was never going to buy a motorized-control synth, but for producers already eyeing NINA or DELIA, it removes the one objection that actually mattered.
