What does Plaits Palette actually let you do?

Plaits Palette is a drag-and-drop firmware compiler that runs entirely in a browser tab. You fill four colour-coded banks, Green, Red, Amber and Orange, eight slots each, with whichever synthesis models you want your Mutable Instruments Plaits to run, then it spits out an installable firmware build. Green carries tonal voices (Virtual Analog, FM, granular, additive), Red covers noise, physical modelling and drum synthesis, Amber holds digital and alternative models like phase distortion and wave terrain, and Orange is reserved for Rubato Labs' own experimental work. That's 32 selectable slots on a module that shipped from the factory with 16.

Where do the extra algorithms come from?

The stock models are lifted straight from Mutable Instruments' original firmware. The experimental slots are Rubato Audio's own designs, including Glisson, GENDY and Spectral Spiral, none of which ever shipped on the original hardware. The rest come from named community developers: Tim Churches, Tom Burns and Dylan Bolink each have models available to drop into a build. The tool also bundles 18 chord tables, six loaded by default, that map pitch CV to preset harmonic structures ranging from conventional Western harmony to microtonal and gamelan tunings.

How does a build actually get onto the hardware?

Most users never touch a programmer. Plaits Palette generates an installable build as a WAV file: play it into the module's audio input and it flashes itself. People who already own a hardware programmer can export Intel HEX instead. Every configuration is checked live against Plaits' 224 KB flash budget (an example build in the tool uses 223.4 KB of it), and there's a toggle to skip the built-in calibration routine to claw back roughly half a kilobyte if a build is tight. Firmware options on offer include Sync In, linear through-zero FM and a faster 50 kHz FM sampling mode.

Why is a firmware remix tool showing up now?

Mutable Instruments isn't making anything new to remix. Founder Emilie Gillet stopped designing modules in 2022 and closed the company by the end of that year. What she did leave behind was open-source firmware code, which is exactly what makes a project like this legal and possible: Rubato Audio built Plaits Palette independently, with no Mutable Instruments involvement, on top of code Gillet chose to publish. Plaits remains one of the most widely owned oscillators in Eurorack, cloned and DIY-built by multiple third parties, so a free tool that lets anyone remix its factory sound bank reaches a real installed base even with the original company gone.

Why it matters

With Mutable Instruments no longer building or updating anything, community tools are the only way Plaits keeps evolving, and Palette turns that from a compile-your-own-firmware exercise into a drag-and-drop one anybody can use.

What we think

This is what happens when a manufacturer actually open-sources the code before shutting the doors: Gillet's decision turned Plaits from a product with an expiration date into an instrument the community keeps building on. Palette doesn't invent that openness, it just makes it usable by people who aren't comfortable compiling C++ themselves, and that's the real unlock here.
