Sónar Is Dead… Or Is This the Ultimate Halloween Marketing Stunt? 🎃
Barcelona’s legendary electronic music festival has announced its own death just days before Halloween. But is this really goodbye, or a clever resurrection in the making?
RIP Sónar. 1994–2026.
On October 27, Barcelona’s iconic electronic music festival shocked its followers with a mysterious Instagram video featuring a coffin, funeral flowers, and three chilling words: “Sónar is dead.”
The festival wiped its Instagram feed, published an obituary in La Vanguardia, and transformed its website into a digital book of condolences, inviting fans to say their final goodbyes.
No explanation. No official farewell statement. Just a funeral.
And conveniently, all of this happened four days before Halloween.
Dead or Just Playing Dead?
Naturally, the announcement sparked speculation across the electronic music community. After more than three decades of pioneering music, technology, and underground culture, could Sónar really be over?
Or are we witnessing an elaborate Halloween-themed marketing campaign?
There are reasons to suspect the latter.
For starters, Sónar had already announced dates for its 2027 edition, scheduled for June 17–19 in Barcelona.
Meanwhile, reports from La Vanguardia suggest the festival could be preparing a major transformation, potentially bringing Sónar by Day back toward Barcelona’s waterfront while keeping Sónar by Night at Fira Gran Via. Those plans have yet to be officially confirmed.
The Death of an Era?
Behind the theatrical funeral, however, lies a more complicated story.
Sónar has experienced significant changes in recent years, including artist boycotts linked to its ownership through investment firm KKR, the departure of its original founders, and major changes to its festival format.
Perhaps the message isn’t that Sónar is disappearing, but that the Sónar we once knew is coming to an end.
A symbolic funeral before a new beginning?
It’s certainly one way to announce a rebrand.
Trick or Treat, Sónar?
With Halloween around the corner, the timing feels almost too perfect to be a coincidence.
Whether it’s a bold creative campaign, a genuine transformation, or simply an elaborate publicity stunt, Sónar has managed to get the electronic music world talking.
And with further announcements expected soon, we might not have to wait long for the resurrection.
So, is Sónar really dead, or is it about to rise from the grave?
Happy Halloween, Sónar. We’re watching. 👻
