Somewhere between a meme and a hazard sheet sits the pill Dutch drug checkers are now telling an entire country's ravers to throw away. It's two-toned, it's got Donald Trump's face pressed into one side, and the break-line on the back reads "NL" over "Trump" like a bootleg merch drop. It looks like a joke. It is not.
What did Trimbos actually find?
On 28 August 2026, Trimbos-instituut, the Dutch national institute for mental health and addiction, issued a nationwide Red Alert through DIMS, the Drugs Informatie en Monitoring Systeem it coordinates across 34 test locations and twelve addiction-care organisations, including Jellinek. Samples of the Trump pill submitted at DIMS sites, cross-checked by the Netherlands Forensic Institute, came back with an extremely high concentration of PMMA (para-methoxymethamphetamine) cut with MDMA. That is the core problem: someone buying what looks like a strong ecstasy pill is actually getting a substance that behaves nothing like one.
Why is PMMA more dangerous than the MDMA it's pretending to be?
PMMA resembles MDMA on paper but not in the body. As Trimbos puts it, "PMMA lijkt op MDMA, maar werkt anders": it looks like MDMA, but it works differently. The high comes on far slower, often hours after swallowing. A raver who feels nothing at the 45-minute mark most people expect from ecstasy does the obvious thing: takes another pill, or a third. Hours later, once both doses hit at once, the crash isn't a comedown, it's a medical emergency: nausea, a racing heart, seizures, and body temperature spiking to a point where organs start failing from the heat alone. Fatal hyperthermia from PMMA is a well-documented pattern in European drug-checking data, and it is exactly the scenario Trimbos is trying to head off before it produces a body count.
What exactly is the difference between MDMA and PMMA?
MDMA mainly increases serotonin, dopamine and norepinephrine in the brain, which is what produces the euphoria, emotional openness, stimulation and rise in body temperature that ravers associate with ecstasy. PMMA is a related stimulant that also drives up serotonin, but its safety margin is far narrower: the dose gap between a normal high and an overdose is much smaller than with MDMA, and it causes severe overheating, dangerously fast heart rate and blood pressure, seizures, serotonin toxicity and organ failure. There is no way to tell PMMA from MDMA by looks, taste or pill markings; only a lab test can. If you or someone near you develops a very high temperature, confusion or agitation, rigid muscles, seizures, fainting, chest pain or trouble breathing, treat it as an emergency.
Why does a country even have a national pill-testing service?
This is the part that rarely gets explained outside the Netherlands: DIMS isn't a fringe harm-reduction experiment, it's a 30-plus-year-old public health infrastructure. Anyone can walk into a Jellinek location in Amsterdam, Utrecht, Amersfoort or Hilversum, or one of dozens of other sites nationwide, hand over a pill anonymously, and get it lab-tested. When a batch turns out to be adulterated or unusually potent, DIMS pushes a Red Alert nationally, the same mechanism that flagged this Trump pill within days of samples coming in. It's the closest thing house and techno culture has to a smoke detector for the drug supply, and it exists precisely because pills are made by criminal chemists, not pharmacists, and nobody buying one on a club floor actually knows what's inside it.

Where can you get a pill checked, right now?
Coverage varies by country, so it helps to know where to go before you need it. In the Netherlands, DIMS runs lab testing through Jellinek and dozens of other sites. In Switzerland, Saferparty/DIZ offers the same service out of Zurich. In Spain, Energy Control runs testing and outreach. Where lab testing isn't available, reagent kits from PRO Test in Europe or DanceSafe in the U.S. can flag some adulterants, though neither can reliably rule out PMMA hiding behind a strong MDMA reaction.
What should you actually do if you've already got one?
Don't take it. That's Trimbos's advice without qualification, not "be careful with it" or "start with half." If you already have a Trump-stamped pill, the safest move is to hand it in for testing at a DIMS location or via drugs-test.nl rather than binning it blind, so the network can keep tracking where the batch is spreading. If you or someone near you has already taken one and starts showing nausea, a rapid heartbeat, seizures or feels dangerously overheated, hours can matter: call 112 immediately, keep the person cool and calm, and don't assume it will pass on its own, because with PMMA the danger window opens well after the pill was swallowed, not during the come-up.
