Vocal Pockets, the plugin house best known for groove and rhythm tools, has pushed into harmony with VIPA, a MIDI chord generator that starts from a picture instead of a piano roll. Pick one of its curated 'Visual Chord Starter' images and VIPA reads the mood and color palette, then hands back 16 chords spread across the keyboard, each key a full voicing rather than a single note.

The pitch is explicit: this is for producers who can hear when something works but can't always name it. 'VIPA is specifically designed for creators who know what sounds good but can't always find the notes,' the company says. 'VIPA handles all the theory, you handle the taste.'

How much control do you actually get?

More than a random-chord generator implies. Detected key and scale can be locked so anything you trigger stays in tune, and you can regenerate a single pad while keeping the ones that already click, rather than rerolling the whole set. A 5-quadrant pad system layers in 10 voicings and inversions per chord, Root, Drop 2, Shell and Quartal among them, swapped with a click instead of manually repositioning notes. Filtering runs across 12 keys, 16 scales, 18 moods and more than 20 genres, and there's an offline chord library for when you're not feeding it fresh images (the image analysis itself needs a connection). Finished ideas drag out as MIDI with strum timing, velocity and one of three humanization modes, Romance, Drunk or Whisper, already applied.

Why does an image-to-chords plugin matter for house producers?

Harmony has always been the bottleneck for the drum-machine-first, sample-flipping side of house and its neighboring styles: plenty of people can program a killer groove and cannot voice a chord progression that doesn't sound generic. Tools like VIPA (and the wider run of AI-assisted MIDI generators from companies like Orb, Endlesss and others over the past few years) are explicitly chasing that gap. It's the same fault line the scene argues about every time one of these ships: does an image-derived chord set count as your writing, or is it someone else's harmony wearing your kick drum. VIPA doesn't resolve that, it just makes the shortcut faster and free to try for two more weeks.
