Ron Hardy, resident DJ at Chicago's Music Box from 1982 to 1987, spliced reel-to-reel edits and pitched turntables up as far as +8 to forge a rawer, faster house sound alongside Frankie Knuckles, then died of an AIDS-related illness in 1992 without seeing it go global.
