The Martinez Brothers have reignited one of dance music’s oldest arguments: if New York had the clubs, the DJs and records that sounded like house before Chicago’s first house releases, who really created the genre? Chicago’s answer has been loud, passionate, and historically pretty convincing.
Ron Hardy, resident DJ at Chicago's Music Box from 1982 to 1987, spliced reel-to-reel edits and pitched turntables up as far as +8 to forge a rawer, faster house sound alongside Frankie Knuckles, then died of an AIDS-related illness in 1992 without seeing it go global.
