Berlin's Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg district has become general tenant of the RAW-Gelände site, a two-year public-lease deal backed by 3 million euros that shields techno venues Cassiopeia and Crack Bellmer from commercial redevelopment.
Berlin's district and state governments will pay landlord Kurth Group roughly one million euros a year to keep Cassiopeia and the rest of RAW Gelände's club scene open for at least two more years, a stopgap deal struck August 11 that still leaves the site's real future undecided.
Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg district has signed a contract with landlord Kurth-Immobilien to lease R.A.W.-Gelände for roughly one million euros a year, halting eviction threats against Cassiopeia and the rest of the cultural site for at least two years.
The Friedrichshain club has been told to vacate the RAW-Gelände by the end of June after the site's owner walked away from talks, and Cassiopeia says it will not give up.
