What does the deal actually cover?

Independent Artist Group (IAG) announced on September 11 that it has signed deadmau5 (Joel Zimmerman) for worldwide representation, and the fine print reads more like a media conglomerate's roster than a DJ's booking contract. The deal spans music, film, television, gaming, technology and intellectual property, according to both We Rave You and EDM Tunes, who confirmed the announcement directly from IAG. That list explicitly folds in ventures deadmau5 already owns: Oberhasli Games, his video game studio; Auto/Pilot, the live-performance software he built for real-time arrangement, sampling, sequencing and automation; and a relaunch of Coffee Run, his long-running digital interview series that has hosted Pharrell Williams, Skrillex, Tommy Lee, Zedd and Dillon Francis in the passenger seat.

IAG CEO Jim Osborne and President Kyle Loftus framed the signing in a joint statement: "Joel is a once-in-a-generation creative force who represents exactly where we believe the entertainment business is going: the intersection of music, technology, content and ownership." They added that "music will always be the center of what he does, but the opportunity here goes well beyond music."

"IAG's proven track record of creating exciting crossover content creation and ownership opportunities for musical artists is what attracted me to them," deadmau5 said in the announcement.

Why sign a DJ like a media company?

Because Zimmerman has spent two decades building the exact catalog that makes an agency's job easy. He was livestreaming production sessions on Twitch before most labels understood what Twitch was, running mau5trap as a genuine A&R operation rather than a vanity imprint, and shipping his own hardware and software tools years before "artist as tech founder" became an industry cliche. IAG isn't discovering a hidden opportunity here so much as finally attaching agency infrastructure, film and TV development, brand deals, licensing, to a business that already existed piecemeal. For an agency, that is a far more defensible long-term asset than a tour rider: IP and software don't cancel a date because of a hurricane or a visa denial.

What's next for deadmau5's ecosystem?

The signing lands during an active musical stretch. Zimmerman released "Science" featuring Stevie Appleton earlier this year, his first vocal single since "My Heart Has Teeth" with Skylar Grey. IAG's stated priority is turning Oberhasli Games, Auto/Pilot and Coffee Run into standalone film, TV and digital projects rather than side hustles that live in his shadow. None of that touches mau5trap or his touring calendar, which the joint statement makes clear stay central. What changes is who's shopping the rest of the portfolio, and to whom.
