What exactly is closing, and what isn't?
Tresor.West is the Dortmund outpost of Tresor, the Berlin institution Dimitri Hegemann built out of a disused bank vault in 1991 and turned into one of techno's founding temples. The West Germany sibling opened in 2019 inside the underground vaults of the former Phoenix West steelworks on Phönixplatz, got cut short by the pandemic within months, and came back properly in May 2022. Per We Rave You, the club has confirmed it will close at the end of 2026. Tresor itself, in Berlin, keeps running as normal: only the Dortmund branch is shutting.
Why is Hegemann saying techno-only doesn't pay anymore?
Hegemann, who still runs the operation, points to three things at once: fewer people walking through the door, the operating costs of running a serious sound system in a 750-capacity room climbing, and clubbers increasingly spending their nightlife money on festivals and individually branded event series instead of a weekly club night. His own words, per We Rave You:
"An exclusively techno-focused programme is no longer economically viable."
That's not a line from a critic or a promoter complaining from outside. It's the founder of Tresor, the club whose name is practically a synonym for techno purism, saying the model doesn't work in 2026.
What happens to the space now?
Tresor.West isn't vacating quietly. The team is running an open call for new operators to take over the Phönixplatz site, aimed at event organizers, collectives and hospitality businesses with a workable concept, applications due November 15, 2026. Before the handover, the club is running a string of closing nights through October, November and December, with Alienata, Phase Fatale and Truncate among the names booked to send it off.
