Berghain doesn't rearrange its own rulebook often. For Berghain, a club built on the DJ set as the unit of worship, handing four days and four rooms over almost entirely to live performance is a statement.
Sound Metaphors returns October 28 through 31, 2026, taking over Berghain itself, Kantine am Berghain, Panorama Bar and Saule. The festival's premise is simple and, for this venue, slightly radical: no turntables as the default, just artists performing their own material live, from modular rigs to prepared instruments.
Who's actually playing?
The opening night, October 28, is concerts only, staged at Kantine: Mohammad Reza Mortazavi on frame drum, cellist and improviser Okkyung Lee, Olga Anna Markowska and Marylou. It's a deliberately non-club opening for a club festival, setting the tone before the bigger rooms open.
Part 1, October 29, leans ambient and modular: Alessandro Cortini, Grand River, Jonathan Fitoussi and ASIA (DE). Part 2, October 30, is where the techno weight lands. Surgeon, the Birmingham producer who has spent three decades defining UK techno's harder, dub-inflected edge, shares the bill with Robert Henke, the Monolake co-founder and Ableton co-creator whose live sets treat sound design as its own instrument. Mark Fell's glitch-rhythm abstraction and Temple Rat's live hardware sets round out the techno side, while Aba Shanti-I brings a genuine dub soundsystem lineage into a building that rarely books outside techno and house.
The festival is built around live performance, not standard DJ sets, a deliberate break from Berghain's usual booking format.
Why does the room matter here?
Berghain's acoustic design and its Panorama Bar / Saule split were built for DJ continuity: long mixes, no breaks, no stage. A live-act bill changes that rhythm entirely, with set starts, stops and instrumentation that a DJ booth was never designed to host. Running it across four rooms simultaneously means the club is testing how far its own format stretches before it's a different festival wearing Berghain's walls.
