Steffi Named Her New Album After Half an Ecstasy Pill. The Rave Was Always the Point.

What is the album actually about?

Steffi has spent more than three decades on dance floors, first as a raver in the late 1980s, then as a DJ, producer and Klakson/Dolly label head, and now as one of the longest serving residents at Panorama Bar inside Berghain. Her fifth solo album for Dekmantel Records, "Half An Owl And A Full Moon Rising," distills that history into nine tracks pulled from a pool of more than 40 demos. "Everything is about taking people on a journey," Steffi says. "I'm not changing my approach to entertain people with a short attention span." The record draws directly on the sound and spirit of Detroit, Chicago, New York, London, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Berlin and Italy, the cities and scenes that shaped her as both raver and producer.

Why "Half An Owl And A Full Moon Rising"?

The title track, and the album's title itself, borrows straight from rave vocabulary: "half an owl" is slang for half an MDMA tablet, a nod to the chemical shortcut so many dancers have taken toward the euphoria Steffi is trying to render in sound. She is careful to frame the record as being about the feeling itself, not the substance. "This is my version. Welcome to my world. This is how I translate ecstasy visually and for body, mind, and soul," she says. It is a rare moment of a Berghain adjacent artist naming a record after the drug culture that runs alongside it, rather than around it.

How does this follow "Patterns Of Vibration"?

"Half An Owl And A Full Moon Rising" follows Steffi's 2025 collaborative LP with Virginia, "Patterns Of Vibration," also released on Dekmantel. She has said that record refocused her on dance-floor positivity after years of touring, and this new solo album builds on that reset. Unlike her past albums, which she has described as being compiled from tracks made over time, this one was built from scratch with a single, unified vision in mind. For the first time, she shared works in progress with trusted friends while the album was still taking shape, testing the material before it was finished rather than presenting it as a fait accompli.

Dekmantel is pressing it as a 4-side double vinyl, alongside a digital release, out Friday, October 9, 2026. "This is what the world needs, colour in every sense, unity, musical diversity," Steffi says of the record's intent.
